NORTH CANTON The city’s annual fireworks display could use a little help.
The North Canton Jaycees are seeking sponsors to offset the cost of the July 4 fireworks show, part of the organization’s Celebration In The Park event.
“It’s a very expensive event and it brings almost no revenue,” said Colin Riley, president of the organization.
Putting on a fireworks show is no small feat, he said. It can cost about $10,000 to $14,000.
The Jaycees are seeking corporate or individual sponsors to offset half that cost. This year, as in the past, the city will offer some financial support, Riley said.
Sponsors would allow the organization to keep offering the July 4 event and use those funds elsewhere in the community, he said.
North Canton Jaycees have run the celebration and fireworks for years. They used to split the cost with the city, but in 2009, the city had to pull funding and the event was almost cancelled. Businesses and other donors have stepped in to help the Jaycees since, according to past Repository reports.
It’s hard to pay for the event year after year, Riley said.
